While everyone is crying about how beautiful the iPhone is, there are a couple of concerns for the price point that one such as myself that works in the cellular industry has to wonder about.
First, congratulations to Apple on a unique design. I have to say, that many of the visions that I once had for my employer to achieve, Apple has succeeded in. It definitely is a sight to behold and the industrial engineers and modern anthropologists really have done it again.
With that, here are the points:
- GSM? With no HSDPA support? What were you thinking? While the tunes and such are great, you have come a long ways in improving power to portable devices. We’ve seen it in the iPod lines. So where’s the broadband support? From a power perspective, you’re not spending any less power running EDGE type transactions.
- Design wise, you would have figured this one from the new iPod designs. Glossy screen for a touchscreen? We’re talking about smudge/fingerprints delight. Anyone that owns a PSP can attest to the craziness in trying to keep it clean.
- Price point. Of course people will buy it. But overall? $599 with a two year contract? Ick. I’d rather put that down on a Sony PS3 and you don’t see me running out to Gamestop buying one yet. Not what you call affordable for your average consumer.
- Internal antenna? I know the looks and all, but internal antennas are terrible when it comes to send and receive. It’s a fact of RF. The more mediums you put between the source and the destination, the less powerful the signal.
All in all, I have to say that it’s a great design innovation but I’m wondering if Apple has finally hit the brick wall when it comes to consumer sense. Outside of this, I have to say that if I was Microsoft right now, I would be seriously worried about the whole Zune division. It’s not that Apple will drop their iPods, but you can see where they wish to take their vision. And the Zune player is just not going to cut it in the long run against such design pedigree.
