Nexus – A Free Web based File Server

nexus.jpg There’s a lot of cool open source web-based stuff, and Nexus definitely falls into the barrel of “cool stuff.” A server side, web-based file server, this really just requires that you have a server with an Internet connection, and support for PHP5, and MySQL. One of the most interesting things about this is that it seems like a very mature project. Not only is there support for document history so that you know who downloaded or accessed what, how many times, and what they did, it also provides file access controls so that you can set certain groups or individuals permissions to access certain files or folders.
What’s more? There is historical reporting, image previews, and mass file management. The last of those three is probably the most useful since at any given time, there is always a need to manage multiple files at a time, instead of the painstakingly slow method of one-file-at-a-time.
So if you’re looking for a nice, pretty file server for your clients or whatever else need you have for a file server, this could be for you. What do you have to lose? It’s open source.
