Getting the most out of your Mac battery

There are two different ways to do this. One is for the older iBooks and PowerPC based Powerbooks:

  • Step 1: Make sure that your laptop is fully charged. Plug in the power adapter and wait until the battery is fully charged.
  • Step 2: Unplug the power adapter and use your laptop normally until the system goes into sleep mode from loss of power and not the Power Settings. Make sure to drain the whole thing in one sitting.
  • Step 3: Once your laptop has put itself into sleep mode, plug the power adapter in and let the system sit until it is fully charged. Your battery is now calibrated correctly.

The other steps are for the newer Macbooks and Macbook Pros:
  • Step 1: Make sure that your laptop is fully charged. Plug in the power adapter and wait until the battery is fully charged.
  • Step 2: Allow the battery to remain in fully charged state for two full hours before proceeding. You may use your laptop normally during this time.
  • Step 3: Unplug the power adapter and use your laptop normally until the system goes into sleep mode from loss of power and not the Power Settings. Make sure to drain the whole thing in one sitting.
  • Step 4: After the system has gone into sleep mode, allow it to rest for five full hours before recharging the battery.
  • Step 5: Plug the power adapter in and let the system sit until it is fully charged. Your battery is now calibrated correctly.
