Minimum wage increase? Not today.

The minimum wage hike from $5.15 per hour to $7.25 per hour was blocked by Senate Republicans today. The Republicans wanted tax breaks for small businesses to help them cover for the hike.
I’m torn at this. Mainly because as a small business owner, I must say that I would have liked the tax break but I also want those that work hourly wage to have a higher pay. But for different reasons than most Democrats.
This is my reasoning. In college, I had a roommate that was disabled from a traffic accident. He went through physical rehabilitation and definitely deserved the government support. But he got so many food stamps that it was enough for both of us and extra food per month. I know that many low income people get free cable and other services. While I’m all for helping out, I don’t believe it’s fair for the middle class to take on the burden of paying for these services and those of low income could in fact live in a better lifestyle due to the money they save from not paying for all of these “luxuries”. I actually know of some people that have gadgets that I can’t even justify on my salary. Fair? No.
So my reasoning for higher minimum wage? Get them enough money for a living wage. Get them off those ridiculous government programs. Leave those for people that need the help, but put a time limit on it (say six months to a year). Thus there is no dependency on those programs.
So it’s a sad day that minimum wage didn’t win out. But for the wrong reasons.

  • I disagree. Raising the minimum wage won’t help anyone. It is a poor attempt at a communist idea by our government. What? You didn’t know our government was communist?
Okay, so let me explain… The USA has a capitalist market… you know, supply-n-demand, free market, all that stuff. What most people don’t realize is that our government is NOT capitalist. Our government is all about making it a “level playing field.”
Now kids, remember in history class when you were given the definition of Communism? That’s right, the core principle is all about leveling the playing field. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying we’re Naziis or anything remotely like that. I’m simply saying that our government constantly attempts to bring the classes together… help the poor… tax the rich (or anyone with money)… and generally ignore everyone else.
Raising the minimum wage will do NOTHING to help the lower income folks in the long run. Yeah, sure, for the next year or so they’ll have slightly more disposable income, but soon prices will adjust up to consume that cash.
I love my country, but sometimes you gotta wonder what they were thinking.

  • You didn’t read what I wrote. I said that if you raise the minimum wage, you pull the plug on long-term government supported programs. Otherwise, it’s just another excuse for votes. Just like Habitat for Humanity. You make people work for it, not just give free handouts.
I don’t disagree with the bringing the classes together since that’s what your usual Democrat will do. They look to “help the poor.” Sorry, but read above.
I totally disagree with the “tax the rich” part. Of the top 10% of the US, or the top 2% in the world, these are the ones that get the largest tax breaks of all. Of the last two decades, anyone that makes it in the “rich” category gets way more breaks than the rest of us. Why? They make more money.
That’s where it’s not so “communist” as you put it. Politicians do that so they get cash-endowed supporters.
You know that they do say that the sibling of capitalism is communism. Oh well.
Unfortunately, you can’t help but think that there’s hidden and secondary agendas than what’s on the table. *sigh* Politics. I hate it. Why can’t people just be on the up-and-up.

I think it will help the poor and hurt the rich like the republicain party because they were not for this and I think it is time to get this bill passed because of all the programs that we have now it would help lower the poverty level in the united states and it would help the blue collar worker alot because the raise would mean that our country is trying to do what is wright for all of us in stead of hurting our pockets with higher taxes and make the poor slump even lower so congress pleas pass this senate because if you don’t it will be your falt for the rich to get even richer so I guess you care about anyone but your pockets senate so I say get off your buts and see the vision that the demacrates saw about helping the middle class worker. Also If I had the money to run I would make all u rep. in that place see how that you all need god in you life and show you how that people like you what the real reason to live is.Als I wouild like to say that you all need to pay attention like the dem. party and listen to you people and forget about mony going in to your pocket you hungry s of a b because of people like you this contury is money hungry so get away from that and the dem party rock on because you are the best geive them hell beacuse you all need to rember who is the loser the people on welfair and the man who can’t pay chil support becaus you all have ate up all his mony by not giving him a rasie that he derserves and you only hur how the next election goes rep party so you have made your bed lie in it because it is comming up to election year and I will pass on vote demacrate not republicain at all beacus tthe dem party has caught the vision and you all need to catch it too

  • What does this tell me? You buy into political BS. Regardless of Republicans or Democrats, they all play the “I’m going to help you” game.
If you don’t understand that, then just trace the money. Wonder why those that work in government CANNOT be efficient in their work.
It has nothing to do with how the Democratic party is better or look after the poor. I’ve seen too many people that are supposedly “poor” and yet they wear $200 Nikes whereas I buy my tennis shoes for like $30.
If people really wanted to help the poor, then boost the salaries of teachers. Give low-income people a decent education. Quit giving them crutch programs.
There are plenty of programs to help the poor out of where they are. Quit taking the free cable service. How about the telephone lines that we as taxpayers pay over $11k per line for? You don’t NEED that. You need food, and a place to live.
And just so I get this in ink. God has nothing to do with this.
The whole child support thing? Give me a break. That’s a pitiful call for sympathy points if I ever saw it. Take responsibility for your actions.
