When anti-comment spam doesn’t work

Interesting post on Hmm that probably has most of the blogging community up in arms about the latest creep in spam attacks. Why? Anti-spam just isn’t working.
Tdavid and I were chatting this morning about this subject and we talked about how his trackbacks keep getting blasted as spam (even when we use two different tools to do a total score and block based on that total score). It’s not just the fact that LUX uses Akismet for MT and Spamlookup. It’s the fact that Bayesian filtering, and the rest of it just doesn’t work anymore.

Are there workarounds? Sure. Whitelists. Comparable lists. Perhaps even the Phishtank method of user voting. Either way, you reduce the number of false positives by using user interaction and on the flip side allow for more blocking of the pseudo-random spam. We say pseudo-random because if you notice, it’s usually a blast of ten-twenty messages of the same item.
Will LUX suffer through this? Sure. As do all bloggers that have comments and any obtainable traffic. We use blogs for conversations and getting the word out, not as a one-way mindbomb.
But in the end, someone has to fix their solution sets or there needs to be a new one formed. Interestingly enough, the biggest players in the blogging world (Automattic and SixApart) haven’t done much since the overthrowing of Bayesian filters. Unfortunate. So while we continue to deal with the false positives and spam that gets around the filtering, we wonder when someone will finally get fed up and create the next great tool. Until then, we all just have to suck it up and deal. Ick.

Some of the false positives need to stand up and start shouting.
