I've been running local DNS server (full blown) for years now to "help" with dns queries... mainly b/c the DNS server on those stupid DSL modems really stink. The biggest benefit isn't really the speed... it's that you can then tie DNS into your DHCP server and access all your local machines by a real name rather than some dotted-number. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
