Google Site Status

Google has this great tool where you can check your site status and when the last time Google’s crawlers went bonkers on your site. It also allows you to install sitemaps to show you statistics of your sites for which you might be able to optimize better.

  • Speaking of Google, have you heard of any troubles recently with Googlebot? It used to visit my site often but politely, suddenly (about a day or so ago) it has started bombing my site with requests — about one or more every second. I incresed my crawl dealy to 60 seconds, but that hasn’t made any difference. In fact, according to my log files, gogglebot doesn’t even seem to be requesting the robots.txt file anymore. Have you heard og anybody else having problems?

  • Nope. Haven’t had that issue at all. They haven’t changed their bot at all that I know of either. Released 2.0 a while ago (3-4 months ago I think), but that’s it.

  • I heard back from Google, their bot doesn’t abide by crawl-delay. If there’s a problem with too frequent requests, they have to make adjustments on their end — which they’ve promised me they’ll do.

  • I’m impressed. Google has resolved this matter in a day. They even apologized for the inconvenience.

  • Customer service. I wish everything was like that.

  • Indeed. I assumed that little old Greensboro101 wouldn’t warrant that kind of service from big old Google. But I was pleasantly surprised. They not only promptly and professionally addressed my issues, they even offered some advice for configuring my robots.txt file that had nothing to do with Google.
If I ever sell out, er, get aquired, Google would be at the top of my list.
