Blocking Internet traffic will cause employers good staffing

Microsoft’s Senior Design Anthropologist, Anne Kirah, has a few words for those employers that like to heavily restrict access to the Internet.

“These kids are saying: forget it! I don’t want to work with you. I don’t want to work at a place where I can’t be freely online during the day.”

So true.

It’s strange how there are many employers out there that are so much about cost reduction and productivity, that they forget how to actually find incentives for their employees to give 150%. Usually it’s due to some IT manager’s ego getting in the way and trying to put down a wall to justify their positions so that you can’t use this application or that application. Some refer to this as the God complex. Funny thing is that the best IT staffing are those that are totally transparent to daily workday trends.

“Bill Gates said years ago that if you worry about internet productivity, you’re worrying about people stealing pens from your stationery cupboard… there are bigger things to worry about.”

Go figure. Words of wisdom from Microsoft. Yet, they are one of the leading technology employers and they truly do know how to treat their employees. Especially when they’re complaining about not having towel service instead of the network like other corporations.

You sir are on the mark again. It isn’t a coincidence that Google’s employees are both among the most autonomus and most innovative and just plain bright in the current tech field. People are interested and proud of what they do, hence they give it their all.

  • Very true. Google has time and again showed me what a great employer they are. Hopefully that holds true at least while the founders are there. My biggest concern with corporations like this are that managers that don’t understand you can’t just “manage anything” start bleeding into the companies.
