Blackbox – hiding information in bmp files

Blackbox is written by Evil Systems that implements steganography within bitmap files. Basically in normal people terms: it hides text in picture (bmp) files. Pretty neat eh? This easiest way to understand this is understanding how compression works. bmps compress easily because there is a lot of free room within the actual image that isn’t used. That free space can either be removed (ie. compressed) or it can be used to store things (ie. stenography). This can be done with multiple types of picture formats but Blackbox currently only supports bmps.
It’s free and runs on Windows.
UPDATE (8/6): fixed a spelling mistake. Thanks Brent.

  • Technically I think that’s “steGAnography”; “stenography” means writing in shorthand (like the person who transcribes court proceedings).
    Pretty cool, though!
