Wireless proposals to cover all of Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem is looking to unwire all of Winston-Salem and eventually, all of Forsyth County. As a project of WinstonNet, it probably has enough push behind it from the corporate members but the question is if it will have the technological background?
Currently proposals are being submitted by a July 7th deadline and will look to pull off similar types of service as are happening around the country in municipality wireless.
Being entrenched in the wireless industry, I will hope to see that they do not pick up any WiFi type backhauls or 900Mhz type equipment that is toted by some of organizations that are part of eNC. If anything, I would look to the cheapest but best infrastructure fit, which currently would have Clearwire ahead of the game if they were to partner with WinstonNet. Clearwire already covers much of Winston-Salem, and connecting another network into it wouldn’t be difficult. It would also cover minimal infrastructure cost on the part of WinstonNet.
But who knows what people exactly think when they choose technologies that “sound good”. One thing for sure. If they choose anything something that is to be here for a number of years to come and they choose WiFi (9 years old technology) or something even older for anything more than distribution points, this wireless geek will be laughing until he cries at the money wasted.
