US representation scarce in top programming competition

The American programmers were hardly to be found.
And this bothers most when it comes to the coding prowess of Americans in the international playground. The competition, 2006 TopCoder Open, is sponsored by the likes of AMD, UBS, Verisign, and the NSA. Yes, THAT NSA.
The three competitions include the Algorithm Competition, Component Design Competition, and the Component Development Competition.
Of all of this, there were only four of the top forty-eight representing the United States. The heavy hitters came from Eastern Europe with Poland weighing in with eleven, and Russia with eight.
