Government source tells ABC News to get new cell phones

…because apparently the source said that the government was tracking down people with confidential sources via cell phone records.
Our question is: What would getting a new cell phone do? Nothing. The cellular provider, if given a warrant or some form of documentation by the government, will probably hand over any number of records that they collect. Heck, recent events tell us that perhaps there didn’t even need to be documentation. It’s amazing what an authoritative position can do.
Getting a new number just delays the inevitable. You can’t change anything from the switch-side unless you happened to control the switch itself. So even calling on a secure line (encrypting the conversation stream) would not change the fact that the phone numbers would still be recorded at the switch.
It’s funny how FUD is spread.
