Rumor: SMS revenues 75 billion USD?

If this rumor is true, then SMS outplays all sorts of mediums in profit margins. The rumor goes:

Total SMS revenues in 2005 were about 75 Billion USD. To put it in context, Hollywood box office is a bit below 30 B USD. Global music industry revenues are about 35B. Videogaming, consoles and all software are about 40. And the total value of all laptop computers sold in 2005 was about 65 B USD. SMS alone earns more than any of those industries…. And SMS is still over 90% profit. Do we love this industry or what?

  • Hi Dark Moon and Lux Et Umbra readers
Thanks for mentioning the 75 billion dollar stat on SMS revenues from the Spring of 2006. I’m sorry I only now found this entry, so you’ve probably spotted the independent verification, but for example the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) in its latest report said 2006 SMS revenues were 80 billion dollars.
Oh, and thank you very much also for mentioning Forum Oxford.
