DHS gets 3rd straight F in cyber security

The Department of Homeland Security has earned another F, the third in three years. Again in the department of Cyber Security. What’s strangely scary about this grade level, is the fact that the Cybercrime division of the department of Justice falls under DHS.

Alongside DHS, other agencies (Agriculture, Defense, Energy, State, Health and Human Services, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs) have scored low scores against the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA).

FISMA requires agencies to meet a wide variety of computer security standards, ranging from operational details — such as ensuring proper password management by workers and restricting employee access to sensitive networks and documents — to creating procedures for reporting security problems.

Scared? You should be. The above failing scores have the key players for defending our country and are fighting the “war on terror.” Also amusing to note that the factor that created these failing grades were because these agencies spent all the money documenting the problems instead of fixing the problems.

“It turns out that the vast bulk of the federal information security money is spent on documenting these systems, not on securing or testing them against attacks,” Paller said. “Most [agencies] are spending so much on the paperwork exercises that they don’t have a lot of money left over to fix the problems they’ve identified.”

And what was that about government inefficiences that we always talk about? Gee.
