Using Google as a free proxy

You can use Google as a free website proxy. Now this isn’t something that I’d recommend doing all the time since it’s rather tedious, but you definitely can use this methodology for the occasional website.
You can run an English to English translation via Google as such:

http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.forbiddensite.com

It should work for any site, in any language that can be translated. Issue is… you have to type that big long line!

  • I actually use this bookmarklet to that effect at work when I get blocked and am too lazy to just grant myself access: javascript:u=location.href;void(location.href=’http://google.com/translate?oe=UTF-8&ie;=UTF-8&hl;=en&safe;=off&langpair;=en%7Cen&u;=’+u);
    and this one as a “Quick Search” in Firefox:
    javascript:void(location.href=’http://google.com/translate?oe=UTF-8&ie;=UTF-8&hl;=en&safe;=off&langpair;=en%7Cen&u;=%s’);

    I tried using that at my school and it din’t work they have it blocked as well. They just got this new blocker. It’s called WEB SENSE. It really sucks! Try to find a way around this one. I’ve tried all that I can and have been blocked each time.

  • If it’s Websense, you’re probably getting keyword blocked. In that case, the only way around any of it is via a proxy or VPN. Of course, I can’t tell you how to do that since then it would stick LUX in the middle of some not-so-wanted legal battles.
