Vatican says ID doesn’t belong in science classrooms

The Vatican’s chief astronomer has come out saying that intelligent design is not a science and does not belong in science classrooms. He goes on to say that if it were to be taught within a classroom, it should be grouped with religion or cultural history.
Rev. George Coyne also says that while he believes God created the universe, he does not think that God intervenes at every minute detail, and instead participates as an “encouraging parent”.

The Rev. George Coyne, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said placing intelligent design theory alongside that of evolution in school programs was “wrong” and was akin to mixing apples with oranges.
“Intelligent design isn’t science even though it pretends to be,” the ANSA news agency quoted Coyne as saying on the sidelines of a conference in Florence. “If you want to teach it in schools, intelligent design should be taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science.”

Well well. I suppose having the oldest second oldest Christian institution come out saying that ID doesn’t belong in science classrooms, should settle the matter. NOT. Don’t forget. We’re those stubborn Yankees! While some of the LUX staff are Christians, we all support the Church of the Spaghetti Monster and some of us are bonafide Pastarians.
UPDATE (10:49AMEST): Oops. Was corrected by Billy on Catholics being the second oldest Church. Thanks Billy!

  • Actually the Catholic Church is the 2nd oldest Christian Church with Greek/Russian Orthodox being the oldest, but it’s good to see the Vatican agrees with men of science.

  • You’re welcome. Now you know why I leave the tech stuff to you.

  • I think the last line should read that we all support the IDEA of the “Church of the Spaghetti Monster” in that some of the debates over what gets taught as fact in our school system is just silly. (Hey, if you can’t be 100% certain then you shouldn’t teach it as fact.)
Anyway, some of us do take our beliefs seriously… and I do think Darkmoon makes a good point that sometimes you’re better off just staying out of it.
If you ask me I’d say that Creationism needs to replace evolution… (go on, you know you want to argue)… but those are my beliefs and by definition they require faith, not just facts… so “science” being based on 100% fact is very different from what our kids are taught everyday in the public school system.
    Just my two cents.

  • Spaghetti was invented by the Chinese, not the Catholics.
And in America today it takes far more faith to believe in Science than religion has ever required.
