Minuteman missles had exact same launch codes

Up until 1977, all Minuteman nuclear missles had PALs (Permissive Action Links) installed. These were an eight digit code that the U.S. Secretary of Defense made sure was installed in case of an accidentally nuclear launch. Unfortunately for him, apparently the military defied this order by presetting all of the PALs to “00000000”. Scary.

Strategic Air Command (SAC) in Omaha had decided that these locks might interfere with any wartime launch orders; so in order to circumvent this safeguard, they pre-set the launch code on all Minuteman silos to the same eight digits: 00000000.
