Outrageous county cellular bills

Why does this make me mad? $475,577 in two mobile plans can make anyone a mad hairy ape. For those of you that can’t understand the big picture, here it is broken down. Approximately $40,000 is spent a month on the two cellular phone bills. Assuming 2000 minute plans (believe me when I tell you, you have to have your head strapped to your cell phone most days to run 2000 minutes) at $100 a month. This means that every month, there are between 300-400 people that talk for 2000 minutes on the county plans (lower figure constitutes business plan pricing). Uhh yeah. Name ten person on the county that needs to talk 2000 minutes a month and I can guarantee that none of them are Commissioners.
You tell me one reason why everyone on the County Commissioners doesn’t have a Guilford County paid cellular phone, ( 0/6 Republicans, and 3/5 Democrats have). Of those three, Bruce Davis the chairman,
ran up $193 in roaming charges.

Davis’ July and August cell-phone bills showed $193.37 in roaming charges, and Yow said many of those calls weren’t about county business.

Why am I pissed off as a taxpayer? None of these people need a cellular phone. Period.

Skip in the same article is quoted:

“The ones that don’t want a cell phone, I guess you don’t want to be accessible to your citizens,” Melvin “Skip” Alston said.

Let me tell you something Skip. I work for a telecommunications company and I don’t even have the right to roam, and I work on the infrastructure so you guys can have service! And guess what? I have to be on-call 24/7. It’s part of my job description. Accessible? Why don’t you let the public read your records and see how much percentage of your calls are actually “citizen related”.
Bill Yow, a Republican commissioner, has questioned those with cellular phones and asked to have them reimbursed so that the calls on the bills can be scrutinized. It is shown here in an article, a blog, and a letter to the editor.
Davis on Yow’s persistence about his cellular phone bill:

He suggested that Yow mind his own business.
“I wish that Mr. Yow would find something positive to bring to the county,” Davis said.

He is, Mr. Davis. He wants to know why indeed you’re wasting tax payer dollars. Which from one that works in the telecom industry, I know that you sure don’t need it and it’s a privilege not a right. And guess what. If any of you give me the easier for citizens to contact bit, I’ll laugh. If so, I do my thinking the best at 2-4AM. Be sure to be fielding cell phone calls during that time since I actually think the best during those hours.
In fact, I urge all Guilford County citizens to start calling your commissioners with any thoughts, questions and comments or even bitching. If they cut you off at all, then obviously they don’t “care about the citizens.” And let’s not all forget the almost half million a year in mobile phone plans that obviously doesn’t cover enough since there are “roaming charges”.
Phone numbers are publicly available on the Guilford County Commissioners site:
Bruce Davis – Democrat (336) 688-2431 – Cellular Phone
Skip Alston – Democrat (336) 451-5299 – Cellular Phone
Carolyn Coleman – Democrat (336) 202-0335 – Cellular Phone
Thanks to Nate DeGraff of the News & Record for doing the majority of the legwork on all of this.
