Google and Sun… and a whole lot of nothing

There was all this hoopla this morning about Google and Sun making an announcement. There were rumors flying as thick as the grease at Waffle House as people whispered about rumors of Web Office suites. Then the news hit:

Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Google Inc. today announced an agreement to promote and distribute their software technologies to millions of users around the world. The agreement aims to make it easier for users to freely obtain Sun’s Java Runtime Environment (JRE), the Google Toolbar and the OpenOffice.org office productivity suite, helping millions of users worldwide to participate in the next wave of Internet growth.

Promote OpenOffice and JRE? Huh? Then the realization hit home. This was a gimmick. A trick! Rage ensued. In all actuality, Sun Microsystems was just looking to do a tag-a-long for PR, since Google is the PR machine. Similarly, Motorola did the same with Apple as of late. You would think that they (Sun) would learn from the two greats of PR. But no…. we have a whole lot of nothing from this press conference. Whoopiedeedoo. You’re promoting Google Toolbar. You want a cookie with that? No wonder Google stock dropped to $311(down $7.68) today and Sun rose to $4.20 by a whole penny. Hooray. Google, you should know better. Sun… get a new gimmick before you try that one again.
