Downtown Asheville

It wasn’t but three hours ago when the woman of my dreams asked me why the citizens of Greensboro didn’t come up to Asheville on a Saturday night to get a glimpse of what was to come. I told her that they all went to Greenville, but my own aspirations was to turn Greensboro’s downtown into a similar type of nightlife as Asheville.
Here are a few reasons why I am so in awe in with this western North Carolinian city even though I find that certain people (in Asheville) are holding it back for more growth:

  • Most small businesses and shops are open until 9PM. We engaged ourselves going window shopping and going into “My Native Ireland” and some other wonderful little shops after dinner.
  • More bars and restaurants tucked away in nooks and crannies. A new one showed up on Wall Street that was down a metal staircase but set up like a small villa. Very cool.
  • Open air dining everywhere including cafes. “Old Europe” was bustling outside. All the restaurants with outdoor seating, or open-air seating were packed.
  • A band was playing at Battery Park, which is right in the middle of downtown. They usually show silent films here also during the summer months. The park was packed with people listening.
  • Street performers… at NIGHT! These are licensed artists that go around during the weekends to perform. There was one lady that is there often painted and dressed up like a toy drummer. She plays when drop some money in her bucket. She’s there all the time! I love her act, and wish I could see that in Greensboro. There was also a guy doing magic tricks/juggling and we watched him for a long time. Couple other artists including one person fiddling and singing and some other “street” bands.
  • Did I mention the little shops here and there? Yes… yes I did.

Asheville didn’t always have the arts and nightlife. The current place of the movie theater that plays artsy films such as “Junebug” used to be a porn theater about ten to fifteen years ago. There was crime downtown that was driven out along with many other seedy characters.
ActionGreensboro did take a number of us (not myself) to Greenville, South Carolina and from the reports back and my own secondhand accounts, that is a wonderful place. But I would challenge you to look a bit closer to home. Asheville has much of the arts, shops and nightlife that Greensboro is beginning to develop downtown. I fathom that Greensboro can go farther than Asheville due to the openess of city officials and the citizens and shoot for a city such as San Franscisco as a model.
But do take a drive west sometime. Perhaps you’ll like what you see just as I do. And from there, build upon the clean slate of Greensboro.

A friend and I were driving downtown in Greensboro a week or two ago, and what did we see? A group of young men, dancing on the street corner on a piece of cardboard. We were shocked and very happy! It’s just a matter of time …
