Carchip E/X – blackbox for your car

This is damn cool, and I might even get one if I can manage to find $160 from my wallet. Carchip E/X uses the OBDII port on your car which is standard in all US cars since 1996. From here, you can gather data such as why your car engine light is on, diagnostic codes for your engine and so on so forth.
With the Carchip E/X, you can record 300 hours of driving data including: time, date, distance, braking, acceleration, engine codes, etc. If there is an accident, you can take the logs from CarChip E/X and generate the last 20 critical seconds of data. Unfortunately the software is only for Windows, but it can generate pretty graphs and watch pretty much everything you’ve ever wanted to know about your car from your “computer chip”.
Now if only I could tell my CarChip… “Warp nine. Engage.”
MSRP: $160

  • Very cool. Forget finding the $160 in your wallet though — put it on the credit card and then charge your friends and neighbors $20 each to read their codes for them.

  • Yeah. It’s too bad they’ll probably all go out and buy one of these and give me the middle finger when I ask them for $20. :p
