Buses now provide WiFi

You want to get young people to use public transportation? And you want to make public transportation a lot more viable for moving people, put WiFi on the buses. King County Metro out of Seattle is doing exactly that.
What’s amusing is that I always thought that it would be nice to tie in a virtual map and a GPS and WiFi to all of the bus stops also. That way, you could get real-time data as the bus rolls into the station and estimated times. A lot better than waiting for a vehicle that you would have no clue if it’s running late, or came early and took off without you.
Take heed Guilford County. There are many technological wonders that you could implement to provide this type of service to the citizens. Whether it be through Junxion Boxes with WiFi or whatever else.

  • NCSU has has a radio-based transit visualization system for a few months, on this note.

No WiFi though, on the buses or (most of) the bus stops, so the system appears to have limited utility.

I think what’s actually amusing is that most Metro systems have location tracking. I don’t of any modern systems that don’t anymore. It would be a simple thing to tie this into an actual bus stop (not the pole stops mind you but the ones with seats).
If you gave the routes that came by at what time, and an ongoing map and ETA, that would make life so much easier for the commuter.
