Congress seeks tax on “all data communications”

The Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation is seeking to increase the range of the telecommunications federal exise tax of 3% to encompass all data communications to the end user. Currently, this tax only shows up on telephone (landline) bills, but if passed, this will include Internet communication, VoIP, and cellular phones. Way to go, America! Trying to tax something that doesn’t belong to you (Internet). Be sure that EFF, Public Knowledge, and others will have a field day with this one.
