ArtistsHouse promotes information sharing

ArtistsHouse is a 501(c)(3) record label that promotes information sharing. Their motto is “information wants to be free” and they don’t stop at just talk. With each CD that is bought, the accompanying mp3s are provided on the CD along with the message to share those mp3s with friends. BoingBoing receives this in awe that someone gets it.

It’s great that people who buy the CD get ready-to-email MP3’s of it to share with friends.
My question is, once their friends get these MP3’s of the whole album, explain to me precisely why they would go to their local record store to buy the CD those MP3’s came from?
    What am I missing here?

  • Nothing. That’s why it’s a 501c3 record label (and I believe only sells via online). It’s grant funded, and the point is probably to promote the artists. This isn’t your average Jessica Simpson, and Usher. These are little known artists that are trying to make it (mostly seems to be instrumentals). I would hope that most people would support artists once they hear the music, but there’s nothing to stop them from not doing so. Then again, why support NPR? You can listen to the news for free too.
